CB Nickell Robey-Coleman, Eagles reach 1-year deal

3 things to know about new Eagles CB Nickell Robey-Coleman

The Philadelphia Eagles are definitely preaching competition in the secondary after adding another slot cornerback in former Rams defensive back, Nickell Robey-Coleman.

Robey-Coleman became an unrestricted free agent last week after the Rams declined to pick up the option on the final year of his contract. The Rams create $5 million in salary-cap space with the move. Robey-Coleman continues the Eagles' offseason theme of adding versatile defensive backs.

Furthermore, they have called for the fans of the game to support the efforts against the spread of Coronavirus themselves. Beyond that, they'll also have to deal with triaging, quarantining, social distancing and closing public services.

Robey-Coleman will compete in a crowded slot position that includes Avonte Maddox, Cre'Von LeBlanc and Tremon Smith. Robey-Coleman is a seven-year veteran who's missed just one game in his career, and he's played between 53 percent and 64 percent of his team's defensive snaps every season. Officials failed to call pass interference against Robey-Coleman, and the play proved critical as the Rams eventually went on to defeat the Saints in overtime to earn a trip to Super Bowl LIII. During the ensuing offseason, the blown call led to a change in the National Football League rulebook, which now allows for pass interference, including non-calls, to be reviewed. He was a key contributor for the last three seasons after signing as a free agent, arguably performing as the Rams' best cornerback in that span.
