Legendary musician Succumbs to Coronavirus at 86

Manu Dibango

Veteran Afro-jazz star Manu Dibango died on Tuesday, 24 March 2020 after contracting the new coronavirus, his representatives have confirmed. He further explained that the Cameroonian artist died in the morning of March 24 at a hospital in Paris.

The saxophonist who inspired what is known as "world music" was recently hospitalized with an illness "linked to COVID-19", his official Facebook page said last Wednesday, adding that he was "resting well and calmly recovering".

He developed a musical style fusing jazz, funk and traditional Cameroonian music.

"His funeral service will be held in strict privacy, and a tribute to his memory will be organized when possible." as per the official message on his Facebook page.

"Soul Makossa" was one of the earliest hits in the nascent world music scene, including a catchy hook copied by some of the world's biggest pop stars.

Manu Dibango is most famous for writing the 1972 single "Soul Makossa", which was a secondary song in a CD dedicated to the Cameroon national football team on the occasion of the African Cup of Nations.

He then reportedly sued Michael Jackson for taking one of the tune's lines "mama say mama sa mama coosa" for a track on his "Thriller" album.
