Samsung wins 5-nanometer modem chip contract from Qualcomm

Qualcomm Snapdragon

Qualcomm did not disclose who would manufacture the chips and reporters could not learn whether the first batches of chips would be made by Samsung or TSMC. So, it shouldn't be surprising that the chip manufacturer is already unveiling one of its most important offerings for 2021.

Today it seems our speculation was correct with Qualcomm announcing their new 5G modem, the Snapdragon X60.

Additionally, the X60's support for 5G FDD-TDD sub-6 frequencies will enable operators to maximise their spectrum resources for both coverage and peaks speeds, as well as double the latter.

With Release 16 of the 3GPP 5G standards slated to be frozen next month and completed in June of 2020, the mobile industry is poised to embrace Standalone (SA) 5G this year. The unique characteristic of the chip, dubbed Qualcomm X60, is its way of working differently in various regions of the world.

Samsung Electronics Co. will be responsible for producing Qualcomm's new 5G modem chips on its 5-nanometer (nm) process in a deal that would enhance its position in the foundry segment.

Korea reports 1st virus death, warns of community transmission
Patients and staff there are being tested for the respiratory virus, and the hospital is being disinfected, according to the KCDC. Local and USA military forces stationed in the city have been forbidden from traveling off base or receiving outside guests.

The Snapdragon X60 is way smaller than the X55 at only 5nm. Qualcomm states that the X60 is geared toward unlocking the value of SA 5G NR (New Radio) with a RFFE that supports "any key spectrum band, mode or combination, along with 5G Voice-over-NR (VoNR) capabilities".

It would also be more significant due to its method of collecting signals over separate frequencies of 5G networks.

Qualcomm is likely one of the most necessary gamers relating to 5G, because the suppliers of the modems that will probably be utilized by nearly each main smartphone - Android and iPhone alike - to hook up with the next-gen community.

Dubbed as Snapdragon X60, the 5G modem-equipped smartphones are expected to launch in early 2021.

It's also capable of some impressive download and upload speeds over 5G - 7.5Gbps down and 3Gbps up - though you'll never recreate these outside of a lab, of course. The company is scheduled to ship samples of Snapdragon X60 and QTM535 to OEMs before the end of the first quarter of 2020. This 5G modem-to-antenna solution is created to enhance the performance and capacity for operators worldwide while increasing average 5G speeds in mobile devices.
