Next year's National Football League playoffs may include 7 teams per conference

7 things to know about proposed CBA for NFL

National Football League team owners voted Thursday to approve proposed terms of a new collective-bargaining agreement, clearing the way for a player vote that will determine whether a revised labor deal is in place for the upcoming season. It allows two more teams to reach the postseason.

In addition, sources said the playoff field would be expanded to seven teams from each conference, and only one team from each conference would receive a first-round bye as opposed to the two that now do. Under the new proposal, only the top seed would get a bye, with the three other division winners hosting the three wild-card teams.

The vote to accept the new CBA was not unanimous, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Still reportedly being negotiated is the 17-game regular season that owners are proposing, while one game would be subtracted from the preseason, leaving each team with three warmup games, Schefter reports. Which means that in 2017, instead of getting a bye before facing the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Steelers would have faced the seventh-seeded Ravens at Heinz Field in the wild-card round. The last 14 Super Bowl teams have all had a first-round bye.

The NFL playoffs could expand to include two extra teams as soon as this coming season under a proposed labor agreement now being reviewed by the owners and players.

He wrote that the NFLPA has not yet agreed to the 17-game season. Expect that number to plummet under this new format.

While many players may savor the increased odds of qualifying for the postseason, some have said they oppose adding a 17th regular-season game because doing so would raise the risk of injury. The additional game has turned into a major sticking point in negotiations between the NFL and the NFL Players Association, which began about a year ago.
