Xinhua news, other Chinese media face restrictions in U.S.

Questioned if there are concerns that Beijing will retaliate towards Western media dependent in China, a single formal pointed out that foreign news retailers there now function less than stringent rules and that the new disclosure procedures impose no constraints on the 5 state-owned Chinese entities' USA operations.

The US State Department spokesman said on Tuesday that the five US-based entities are not independent news organisations-they are effectively controlled by the (Chinese) government.

Other U.S. partners of Chinese media entities, including the China Daily Distribution Corp. and Hai Tian Development U.S.A., Inc., both of which distribute newspapers, have been registered for decades.

State Department officials said that in accordance with the Foreign Missions Act, Xinhua, China Global Television Network, China Radio International, China Daily, and People's Daily will be designated as "foreign missions", effective immediately. The organizations won't face any journalistic restrictions, meaning they can still report from pretty much anywhere, including State Department briefings. The rules also apply to foreign embassies and consulates in the United States.

"China Daily's important role in China's foreign disinformation campaign warrants a full-fledged investigation", said the letter, initiated by Arkansas Republican Senator Tom Cotton and Indiana Republican Congressman Jim Banks and co-signed by seven other Republican senators and 26 representatives.

In Washington on Tuesday, the first State Department official said they would not speculate on China's response or possible retaliation against American journalists working in the country. Following the decision, Beijing yesterday said that it had revoked the press credentials of three journalists from the Wall Street Journal over a column with a "racist" headline.

China Daily is an English-language newspaper published by the Chinese Communist Party.

"We are determined to treat China as it is, not as what we want it to be".

The expression "sick man of Asia" is frequently connected with China in the late 19 th and also very early 20 th centuries, at once of unequal treaties and also early american appropriation of Chinese area by global powers under the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).

China Daily's spending in the United States has soared from $500,000 in the first half of 2009 to more than $5 million in the latter half of 2019, the study said, quoting required filings.

He said the official media outlets helped promote understanding and that Beijing would "reserve the right" to retaliate.

Instead, China's government is getting ever worse - and far more powerful, to boot.

"These guys are in fact arms of the CCP's [Chinese Community Party's] propaganda apparatus", one official said.

The officials said there is precedent for designating state-run news agencies as "foreign missions", including during the Cold War, when most, if not all, Soviet outlets were so identified.
