Deaths rise to 1,868 in China as nation battles against epidemic

Scared and exposed Rise in virus cases among China’s medics

Liu is at least the seventh health worker to die of the COVID-19 disease among the more than 1,700 doctors and nurses who have become sick.

- China's daily new confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus pneumonia outside Hubei, the epicenter province of the outbreak, have since February 3 dropped for 14 consecutive days.

China says about 72,000 people have been infected and more than 1860 have died in mainland China, but numbers are rubbery because the country is counting many cases based on symptoms rather than the methods World Health Organization uses.

Prime Minister Modi had sent a letter of condolence to Chinese President Xi Jinping and lauded the tremendous effort made by the Chinese government to deal with the coronavirus outbreak.

But since the quarantine was implemented, more than 540 cases of the virus have been identified among the more than 3,700 people isolated. United Nations chief Antonio Guterres on Tuesday said the outbreak is not yet out of control, but it is a "very risky situation".

Antonio Guterres said in an interview in Lahore, Pakistan, that "the risks are enormous and we need to be prepared worldwide for that".

"It may be that the epidemic is simply running its natural course, and is starting to run out of new people to infect".

Trade fairs, sports competitions and cultural events have also been disrupted.

The Hubei native had graduated from Wuhan University's School of Medicine in 1991 and went on to a career as a chief physician, neurosurgeon and administrator.

Korean star Park leads at Australian Open
She walked off the 16th green only two shots ahead of American Amy Olsen but finished strongly to claim her 20th LPGA title. Park had an Australian on her bag Sunday, making her win sweeter.

The latest news comes after another doctor who worked in Wuhan, Li Wenliang, succumbed to the coronavirus after being accused of spreading fake news when he first raised concerns over the "Sars-like" virus.

At the same time, 72,436 people have been infected and more than 12,500 recovered so far, according to the Chinese state health committee.

"It's too early to tell if this reported decline will continue. Every scenario is still on the table".

Tens of thousands of medical workers have been fighting to contain the spread of the coronavirus, which is believed to have first surfaced in a seafood market in Wuhan, the capital of the central province of Hubei. Health authorities there said the change was meant to get patients treated faster. Severe symptoms such as pneumonia occurred in 14% of them and critical illness in 5%.

The fatality rate for these confirmed cases is 2.3-2.8 per cent for males versus 1.7 per cent for females.

While the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) outbreak of 2002-2003 affected fewer people, the fatality rate was almost 10%.

The article, published in a weekly volume by the China Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Ccdc), includes all the cases registered in the Chinese infectious disease information system until 11 February.

One of the most senior doctors in Wuhan has died from the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, with numbers for the outbreak continuing to grow. There is no vaccine yet for the virus, nor any known effective therapeutics.
