‘Assault Weapons’ Ban Shelved by Virginia Senate Committee

The bill in question, known as HB961, would have banned the sale of semi-automatic rifles it considered "assault weapons", including the popular AR-15 rifle, as well as the possession of magazines with a capacity over 12 rounds.

Four moderate Democrats joined Republicans on the State Judiciary Committee to delay the bill for one year, while the state's crime commission will study the issue. The proposal's rejection was cheered by gun advocates attending the committee vote, and means the bill will be shelved for the time being. Previous attempts to enact an "assault weapons" ban have also failed to clear the State Judiciary Committee. Lawmakers advanced the bill to the Senate where it was unlikely to pass.

Why it matters: Democrats flipped the Virginia House and Senate a year ago after campaigning hard on gun control. Virginia Delegate Mark Levine, who helped passed the bill in the House, and his collegues in the front row were seen to be very disappointed. "We will be back next year", Alena Yarmosky, a spokeswoman for Northam, said in an email to CNN. These bills represent historic steps forward in keeping Virginians safe from gun violence.

Judge in Roger Stone case schedules Tuesday phone hearing
The letter notes that Barr did an interview with ABC News that he criticized the president's tweets but says that "Mr. Barr's actions in doing the President's personal bidding unfortunately speak louder than his words".

Democrats took full control of the state government beginning in January, with the hopes of passing a slew of gun restricting measures amid a growing "Second Amendment sanctuary" movement in the state led by the pro-gun group, Virginia Citizens Defense League.

The Democrats' momentum on the gun control issue was at least temporarily derailed with Monday's committee vote.
