First coronavirus death outside Asia as China toll leaps past 1500

By Canadian Press
China reports major drop in new virus cases 143 new deaths Feb 15 2020

"I was informed (of this death) last night", said the minister.

The number, however, was nearly half those reported the previous day, and World Health Organization (WHO) chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the body has asked China for details on how diagnoses were being made.

A total of 138 Indians, including 132 crew and 6 passengers, are among the 3,711 people on board the quarantined ship.

The prevention and control of the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak is now at its most crucial stage in China and Hubei Province remained the main battlefield, a senior health official said.

About 55,748 people were being treated, while 1,380 people have died of the coronavirus that emerged in December past year in Wuhan, capital of central Hubei Province. The man did not live in Wuhan, the central Chinese city hardest-hit by the virus, but was from Hubei province that includes Wuhan.

COVID-19, a disease stemming from a new form of coronavirus, has spread to more than 24 countries since December, when the first infections appeared in central China. Of the medical workers, 20,374 are now working in Wuhan, figures from the NHC show. "We're encouraged that an global team of experts is now on the ground working closely with Chinese counterparts to understand the outbreak".

But he said the agency is "concerned by the continued increase in the number of cases in China", and by reports about the number of health workers who have been infected or died.

Because he "didn't fulfill the definition" of someone considered at risk of infection with the virus, the hospitals decided it was unnecessary to test him, Yazdanpanah said.

China scrambles to contain spread of virus
To prevent the spread of the virus, China announced on Friday that it is building a 1,000-bed hospital to treat infected patients. It causes cold- and flu-like symptoms, including cough and fever, and in more severe cases, shortness of breath.

Outside mainland China, there have been almost 450 cases in some 28 countries and territories, and three deaths.

On Friday, Buzyn told local media that the Chinese government has taken appropriate measures to dry up the source of the novel coronavirus pneumonia epidemic and prevent its spread.

One of the goals of the joint mission is to provide suggestions on the prevention and control of the COVID-19 outbreak in China and globally, it said.

Other French medical officials said earlier that the man had arrived in France on January 23 and quickly fell ill.

One task of the World Health Organization team along with their Chinese counterparts is to come up with standard medicine to cure the disease.

More than two dozen countries have confirmed cases and several nations have evacuated their citizens from Hubei.

The Chinese government has also approved field trials for experimental USA antiviral drug, Remdesivir to treat COVID-19 patients. Remdesivir has been used recently to treat Ebola virus in Africa.

A top Chinese official, in an interview with Reuters, acknowledged that the coronavirus was a huge challenge, but defended the government's management of the epidemic and lashed out at the "overreaction" of some countries.
