Defying expectations of a rise, global carbon dioxide emissions flatlined in 2019

The growth of renewable energy and fuel switching from coal to natural gas led to less emissions from advanced economies

The company had previously committed to cut methane emissions from its natural gas operations by 50% between 2010 and 2030 and carbon emissions from its power generating facilities by 80% between 2005 and 2050.

"We have the energy technologies to do this, and we have to make use of them all", the Turkish economist and energy expert added.

After 2031, total USA energy-related Carbon dioxide emissions resume growth but remain four percent lower than 2019 levels in 2050.

Today, Dominion Energy announced a goal to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, joining the ranks of at least 17 other US utilities setting net-zero targets.

Power generation from coal plants fell by nearly 15 per cent previous year due to the growth of renewable energy, fuel switching to gas, a rise in nuclear power and weaker electricity demand.

As part of its mandate as the leading global energy organization, the IEA is focusing on both energy security and global clean energy transitions, helping governments steer the energy sector towards worldwide climate targets in a secure, sustainable and affordable manner. For the first time ever, natural gas produced more electricity than coal and wind-powered electricity almost caught up with coal-fired electricity.

"We now need to work hard to make sure that 2019 is remembered as a definitive peak in global emissions, not just another pause in growth", said Dr. Fatih Birol, the IEA's Executive Director.

U.S., Taliban close to reduction in violence agreement
The latest attack comes as USA and Taliban negotiators wrangle over a possible peace deal to end the almost two-decade war. President Ashraf Ghani called the bombing "a crime against humanity" while repeating his call for a nationwide ceasefire.

Aside from the Outlook, the IEA has said it is keen to create a "grand coalition" of governments, companies and investors seeking to align with the Paris Agreement.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) responded on Twitter, "FACT you will NEVER see on the 6 o'clock news: USA emissions FELL 2.9%, or by 140 million tons, continuing the trend of the United States LEADING THE WORLD IN TOTAL EMISSIONS DECLINE since 2000".

European Union emissions fell by 160 million tonnes or 5 per cent last year from a year earlier due to more use of natural gas and wind power in electricity generation. "This welcome halt in emissions growth is grounds for optimism that we can tackle the climate challenge this decade". Emissions from Japan fell 4.3%, the most since 2009, as output from recently restarted nuclear reactors climbed.

By contrast, emissions in the rest of the world rose by nearly 400 million tonnes past year, led by higher coal use in Asia.

Across advanced economies, emissions from the power sector declined to levels last seen in the late 1980s, when electricity demand was one-third lower than today.

This ministerial-level event will bring together key government ministers, CEOs, investors and other major stakeholders from around the world with the aim of accelerating the pace of change through ambitious and real world solutions.

The IEA Clean Energy Transitions Summit will be preceded by the fifth edition of the Agency's annual energy efficiency ministerial conference, which will also take place in Paris on July 8, and will be an opportunity to review the findings of the IEA's Global Commission for Urgent Action on Energy Efficiency.
