Pence: "We'll see" if UK's Huawei decision threatens trade deal

Owen Paterson is among the signatories to the letter

Nigel Farage exposed the Johnson family's close relationship with China and Huawei and how it has influenced PM Boris Johnson's decision to involve Huawei in the UK's 5G network.

The group, including four ex-cabinet minister, wants to "high risk" vendors are excluded now, or gradually over time.

"And, I think, therefore, we need to get the Government to look to get the involvement of Huawei, not to 35 per cent, but to zero".

The UK's decision to partially include Huawei in its 5G network came as a massive blow to the Trump administration, which has been lobbying its allies to freeze Huawei out of their 5G equipment entirely on the grounds that the company provides technological "backdoors" for Chinese government espionage.

He said there was a lot of disquiet over the government plans. In its statement, the ambassador said that China expects France to honour its previous commitments and demands transparent and non-discriminatory conditions for Huawei.

He told the program: "The Foreign Minister said on the mailbox that China is seen in these matters as an attacker who is constantly attacking our systems alongside Russian Federation". This goes against the principles of a market economy and free trade, "the Chinese embassy argued".

US vice president Mike Pence
Mike Pence said the Huawei decision ‘remains a real issue between our two countries

Rejecting security fears about Huawei, the embassy stressed that the Chinese telecoms giant offers "important technology, cost and market advantages".

But the senior Conservatives have said there are alternatives to the Chinese firm.

Former ministers Owen Paterson, former Brexit minister David Davis and former Secretary of State Damian Green all put their names to the letter that states some MPs were "working to find a better solution" to the 5G issue.

The letter says: "We are seeking to identify a means by which we ensure that only trusted vendors are allowed as primary contractors into our critical national infrastructure". The French government has confirmed that it'll make an objective decision in picking the right company for a 5G deal. Quebeckers appeared to be the most open towards Huawei, with 53 per cent either supporting the United Kingdom scenario of limited involvement or fully supporting Huawei's participation in 5G. The equipment has been deployed at the periphery, separated from the "core" where data is processed.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Chinese embassy in Paris said that it was "deeply shocked and concerned" over recent media reports that the French government is planning to take restrictive measures against the Chinese company in the deployment of 5G mobile technology in France.
