Baghdad Covered in Snow for The First Time in a Decade

The last time, the city had seen snowfall was in 2008, which didn't last long and was a really short-lived affair. Iraqis of all ages said it was the first time they had ever seen snowfall in Baghdad. Before that, it had been a century since the capital witnessed any snowflakes.

The traditional palm trees adorning the streets and boulevards were White, and the tents in the Thair square where the anti-government protestants were taking cover were covered in snow as well.

'Snowfall may continue until Wednesday given the very cold weather, ' said Amer al-Jaberi of the Iraqi Meteorological Centre, explaining that the cold wave had come from Europe.

Pictures and videos show young people enjoying snowball fights, and photoshoots, while some residents used the rare opportunity to make snowmen.

Snowfall is known to occasionally occur in northern parts of the country, particularly in mountainous regions and regions such as the war-torn city of Mosul, although it becomes an extremely rare occurrence as one travels further south.
