China praises Canada, slams USA over coronavirus response

"I mean we have a month and a few days worth of experience with a virus that's rapidly accelerating in China and has already been mostly through travel, through 26 plus countries, including the United States", Fauci said.

"We expect to find other cases in the United States", said Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases.

The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is making almost US$250 million in emergency funds available to cover the cost of the response, an agency spokesman said on Monday.

A number of those under observation recently returned from China aboard two specially-equipped Air India flights sent to the country evacuate Indian citizens, many of them students studying overseas.

Passengers arriving in the United States on commercial airlines will be directed to one of 11 U.S. airports for additional health assessments.

The 57 confirmed new deaths was the single-biggest increase since the virus was detected late previous year in the central city of Wuhan, where it is believed to have jumped from animals at a market into humans.

"CDC is working with the states to determine where travellers will be quarantined", Messonnier said. They were among the approximately 200 Americans who were transported back to the U.S. on a chartered flight arranged by the State Department last week.

2 dead, 1 injured in shooting at Texas A&M Commerce
The A&M-Commerce University later posted on Twitter: "The precautionary shelter in place recommendations have been lifted". Texas A&M's campus in Commerce, Texas, is over 200 miles north of Texas A&M's main campus in College Station.

When a lockdown and blanket travel ban were finally introduced, they swept up more than 50 million people in Wuhan and nearby cities. Some of the designated airports have military bases nearby, while some states have planned to use hotels. "We do not believe these people pose a risk to the communities where they are being temporarily housed. We are taking measures to minimise any exposure".

Calling the virus a pandemic would take it to a new level, however, since that term refers to a more global outbreak.

The study said the new coronavirus is 80% genetically similar to the SARS virus that killed more than 800 people in 2002 and 2003.

In China, all but one of the 57 new deaths were reported Monday in Wuhan and the rest of Hubei province, most of which has been under lockdown for nearly two weeks to stop people leaving and transmitting the virus. Four of the five had recently traveled to Wuhan, where the outbreak originated. Two people were tested in Ventura County for the virus, the Public Health Department said.

The CDC confirmed the first case of 2019-nCoV in the US on January 21.

Health authorities released updated figures of 361 deaths and 17,205 confirmed cases, an increase of 2,829 over a 24-hour period, as other countries continued evacuating citizens from hardest-hit Hubei province and restricted the entry of Chinese or people who recently traveled in the country.
