Ranked doubles player Robert Farah tests positive for anabolic steroid

Robert Farah left announced the positive test on Twitter

Top-ranked doubles player Robert Farah of Colombia says he tested positive for a banned anabolic steroid.

"The Tennis Anti-Doping Programme can confirm that Robert Farah provided an Out-of-Competition sample on October 17, 2019, which returned a positive finding for Boldenone", a tweet from the media account of International Tennis Federation (ITF) read.

He and fellow Colombian Juan Sebastian Cabal won the prestigious Wimbledon and US Grand Slam US Open's doubles titles a year ago.

"A few hours ago the ITF informed me of the presence of Boldenona in a test that I did on October 17, 2019 in Cali".

According to Farah, he had been tested 10 days earlier in Shanghai during the Masters 1000 event and had passed. He said he was tested more than 15 times throughout the year.

'This substance is frequently found in Colombian meat and can affect the results of tests to athletes, ' wrote Farah.

Farah said he would consult his group of advisors and consider the next steps to prove he did not deliberately consume the banned substance. "I am calm and confident of the results of this process".

The Australian Open starts on Monday.

Positive tests for Non-Specified Substances carry a mandatory Provisional Suspension.

The 24-year-old, who competed in the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Cup as recently as last week, provided a urine sample on November 19 2019 in association with the Davis Cup Finals held in Madrid, Spain. He adds that the levels cited were "incredibly low" and didn't provide a "performance-enhancing benefit".

The second player - Chile's Nicolas Jarry - stood as high as No 38 in the singles rankings last July, so these are both significant names. He reached the quarterfinals in doubles at the 2018 French Open and U.S. Open.
