Bernie Sanders Told Warren Woman Couldn't Win

Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren

The hashtag #RefundWarren trended on Twitter as supporters of Senator Bernie Sanders encouraged anyone who had donated to Senator Elizabeth Warren's 2020 campaign through the ActBlue platform to request a refund.

Sanders vehemently denied the report, saying, "It is ludicrous to believe that at the same meeting where Elizabeth Warren told me she was going to run for president, I would tell her that a woman couldn't win".

Editor's note: This is a developing news story.

Warren and Sanders are fellow US senators, friends and their party's progressive standard-bearers who agreed early in the nominating contest to an informal non-aggression pact.

"I have no interest in discussing this private meeting any further because Bernie and I have far more in common than our differences in punditry", Warren said.

"Direct denial from the accused source and a "no comment" from the camp it comes from. four anonymous sources, none of whom were in the room", commented journalist Jack Crosbie, formerly of Splinter News.

With some critics focused their ire on Warren for not immediately pushing back against the reporting-which as of this writing her campaign has not done-other voices warned that there could be other forces at play.

"No one is going to trash Elizabeth Warren", he added.

These were the first of the 11 CIA Democrats to endorse a candidate for the presidential nomination.

"Bernie knows me, and has known me for a long time", Warren said.

Sanders has also apparently chided Warren as the candidate of the elite, with Politico reporting that Sanders volunteers were instructed to tell voters that Warren could not expand the Democratic base in a general election. In response, Warren, while campaigning in Iowa, said she was "disappointed" in Sanders' campaign and hoped he reconsidered the approach.

Sanders, however, has flatly denied saying it. But in the final weeks before voting begins, Sanders has surged ahead in the early states as Warren has declined.

Still, the controversy is likely to revive anxiety among Democrats about whether - almost four years after Hillary Clinton lost her White House bid - voters are willing to support another woman running for president.

The exchange between the two candidates comes just ahead of Tuesday's Democratic National Committee primary debate - which will be the last such event before the February 3 Iowa caucuses - meaning there's a chance that the two senators could end up swapping some televised blows over the claims in the volunteer script. Warren's Iowa organization is rated by local experts as the strongest, but the poll showed Sanders' supporters as the most committed to him compared to his rivals' backers.

Sanders is eager to take the fight to Biden, as his advisers believe his message on income inequality and major structural change can appeal to the same white working-class voters that make up much of Biden's base.

Critics of the reporting, which immediately sparked prominent headlines elsewhere and gained traction on social media, said the story is the kind of irresponsible journalism created to sow division and little more.

Sanders also stepped up his criticism of the foreign policy record of former Vice President Biden, the choice of the Democratic Party establishment for the presidential nomination, citing Biden's 2002 vote for the Authorization for Use of Military Force resolution that gave the green light for the Bush administration to invade and occupy Iraq.

And Charles Chamberlain, chairman of the liberal group Democracy for America, warned that a failure of the two to work together "can cost us the election".

The two progressive senators have refrained from engaging each other in negative attacks throughout the Democratic primary. But in a statement later Monday, Warren said the description of their meeting was correct.

"This fire was started", Chamberlain said, but "it can be put out by leadership by example from the top".
