The Spaniard, who was aware of his fate, met with the club's hierarchy at the training ground on Sunday morning following the 2-1 defeat on Saturday evening away to Southampton.

Watford have sacked Quique Sanchez Flores as their head coach.

"I would love to say a big thank you from my heart for the appreciation, respect and support that I've felt in each moment I've lived in the lovely family that Watford is", Flores said in a statement.

Watford chairman Scott Duxbury said a replacement will be appointed "imminently", with former Brighton boss Chris Hughton reportedly in the frame.

In the 10 matches that Sanchez Flores was in charge for, Watford picked up one win, drew four times and lost the other five.
