Police name second victim of the London Bridge attack

Cambridge University worker Jack Merritt was stabbed to death in London Bridge on Friday

Both individuals were University of Cambridge graduates who had been attending the event at the hall organised by the university's Learning Together programme.

Mr Merritt's family called the 25-year-old a "beautiful, talented boy" in a statement, saying he died "doing what he loved".

Toby Williamson, chief executive of the conference venue where the rampage began, said many of his workers helped save lives when they leapt into action and fought back against Khan.

"She had a wonderful sense of mischievous fun and was generous to the point of always wanting to see the best in all people", they added.

They said he "would not want this awful, isolated incident to be used as a pretext by the government for introducing even more draconian sentences on prisoners, or for detaining people in prison for longer than necessary". R.I.P. Jack: "you were a attractive spirit who always took the side of the underdog". Confirming his death yesterday, his father, David Merritt, wrote on Twitter: "Cambridge has lost a proud son and a champion for underdogs everywhere, but especially those dealt a losing hand by life, who ended up in the prison system".

"She was intent on living life to the full and had a wonderful thirst for knowledge, enabling her to be the best she could be".

The terrorist group said that Usman Khan, 28, committed the attack on their behalf, although no evidence was offered up.

The 34-year-old was arrested on suspicion of preparation of terrorist acts and recalled to prison due to a suspected breach of his licence conditions. The force has said there is no information to suggest he was involved in the incident at London Bridge.

First clip of Virginia Roberts' explosive Panorama interview on Prince Andrew released
This comes after the prince's "disastrous' BBC interview and increased scrutiny over his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein ". Epstein was being held on sex trafficking charges at a federal prison in Manhattan when he killed himself August 9.

"I think the practice of automatic early release, where we cut a sentence in half and let really serious and violent offenders out early, simply isn't working", said Johnson.

Khan, who was living in Stafford, north of Birmingham, had been given permission to travel into London by police and the probation service.

Johnson, a Conservative, has blamed legal changes made by a previous Labour government for the fact that Khan was freed from prison a year ago after serving half of a 16-year sentence for terror offences, without parole officers assessing whether he still posed a risk.

And former Tory justice minister Phillip Lee - who has since defected to the Lib Dems - launched an attack on Mr Johnson, accusing him of "lying and misleading" in the wake of the tragedy.

Johnson said if he won the December 12 election he would invest more money in the prison system and make sentences tougher.

Three other people were taken to hospital - one has since returned home while the other two remain in a stable condition, according to Dr Vin Diwaker, medical director of the NHS in London.

He joined Polish chef Lukasz who ripped a five foot whale tusk off a wall and charged at Khan with the aim of disarming him after he slashed and stabbed attendees at a conference on rehabilitation close to London Bridge.

No-one else is being sought over the attack.
