Australia vs Pakistan: Warner shatters records in Adelaide

Musa Khan no-ball

On Day 2 of the Adelaide Test that belonged entirely to David Warner, Australia captain Tim Paine managed to attract the limelight for a while by taking a blinder behind the stumps. Shah (66 not out) remained at the crease at tea when Pakistan were 213 for eight facing a likely follow on.

However, the Australians were far from ideal on Sunday, where spinner Yasir Shah became Pakistan's oldest player to score a maiden Test century.

In reply to the hosts' massive first innings total of 589/3, the visitors were once reeling at 89/6 in the first innings before Babar Azam and Yasir Shah came together for a rescue operation, showing great grit and determination to share a crucial 105-run stand seventh wicket.

The 29-year-old returned to star with seven wickets in the first-Test win over Pakistan and has impressed again this week, his match figures 7-76 at the end of day three.

Yasir raised the mark in the 86th over of the innings, off 192 balls, when he chipped Josh Hazlewood just over Pat Cummins at mid-on and scampered through for the single.

They reached 39-3 in their second innings before rain ended play, still 248 runs behind Australia.

He now holds the distinction of being one of only three Australians to score more than 250 twice, the others being Bradman and former captain Michael Clarke.

A fired-up Cummins ended Yasir and Abbas's fearless ninth wicket rearguard at 87 runs with a brute of a short ball that pinged off Abbas's glove and went to Warner at gully.

One of Starc's victims was the key scalp of Babar, who again gave Pakistan their only real light with 97 to go with his century at the Gabba.

It happened in the fifth over of Pakistan's follow-on which was bowled by Mitchell Starc.

But his quest to become just the 13th tourist to hit successive tons in Australia fell agonisingly short when he edged Starc behind to a diving Paine.

Starc earlier dismissed Azam and Shaheen Afridi in consecutive balls before Abbas survived the fierce hat-trick ball.

Two Yasir edges bounced marginally in front of Steve Smith at first slip off the spinners, suggesting he was perhaps standing too deep. However, Paine sent out the message that Warner had time to go to 335 before he closed the innings, allowing the 33-year-old opener to write a fresh page of Australian cricket history a little more than 18 months after the Newlands scandal that had threatened to leave his name more associated with ball tampering than batting.
