Iraqi spiritual leader warns of ‘great risks’ from protests

Amnesty International said in its updated report that Iraqi security forces were not only using live ammunition but "military-grade tear gas grenades which can shatter skulls when fired at close range".

In southern Iraq, dozens of anti-government protesters burnt tyres and blocked the entrance to the port of Umm Qasr, preventing lorries from transporting vital food imports, just hours after operations had resumed, port officials said.

In the southern city of Basra, two people were killed as security forces dispersed hundreds of demonstrators outside the local government headquarters on Friday, police and medics told Reuters.

In Baghdad, protesters had been concentrated in Tahrir Square but have increasingly spilled over onto nearby bridges leading to the western bank of the Tigris.

Later, the Iraqi military said in a statement that 17 rockets had landed near a base hosting USA forces in northern Iraq, Reuters reported.

Demonstrators have been trying to reach Baghdad's Green Zone, which houses government offices and foreign embassies. "They must avoid using excessive force with peaceful protesters".

Human Rights Watch (HRW) has characterized Iraqi protesters being killed by tear gas canisters fired by the security forces as a "gruesome pattern" and called on the police and military to exercise restraint during the protests.

Six were killed and at least 41 injured. Many activists have been arrested and in recent days, there have been reports that people have disappeared, apparently by force.

The violent response from authorities has fuelled public anger.

Protesters, some of whom view Sistani as part of the political and religious system they say is the cause of many Iraqis' misery, took little solace from the cleric's words.

In an apparent projection of normalcy, state television aired a recorded address by Abdul Mahdi to cabinet ministers on Thursday in which he discussed the 2020 budget.

On Friday, the country's top Shia cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani, said there should be "no more procrastination". People are demanding the government's dismissal, as well as economic reforms, better living conditions, social welfare and an end to corruption.
