AP Job interview: Ex-speaker Bercow makes Brexit a large blunder

Where John Bercow stands in the list of longest-serving Speakers

When asked whether the Brexit is beneficial to the UK's global status, Mr. Berkov said to the event: "The honest answer is no".

In his first comments since quitting as Speaker and an MP, Bercow told the Foreign Press Association: "I'm no longer the Speaker, so I don't have to remain impartial now".

Mr Bercow, who was frequently accused of siding with Remain MPs in Parliament, insisted he was "always fair in the chair" but said: "Brexit is the biggest foreign policy mistake in history".

He continued: "The honest answer is that I don't think it helps the UK". I respect Boris Johnson but Brexit doesn't help us.

Mr Bercow also faced calls to quit past year over his alleged partisan behaviour when a "Bollocks to Brexit" sticker was spotted on his auto - although he claimed the vehicle belonged to his wife Sally.

"We are part of a world of power blocs and trade blocs, my feeling is that it is better to be part of that power block and of that trade bloc than not".

Mr Bercow left the role after a decade which has been viewed as a time of reform but also controversy.

He added: "I think The Brexit is the biggest Brexit".

In the wide-ranging interview Mr Bercow defended his actions and said he was "championing the rights of Parliament".

Lindsay Hoyle - a former deputy speaker and Labour MP - was elected as the new Speaker earlier this week.

Hoyle was elected speaker of Britain's House of Commons on Monday, chosen by lawmakers from among seven candidates to replace the influential but contentious Bercow.

The political crisis has forced parliament into backing a snap general election on December 12.
