Inventor quits race to make electric cars

James Dyson founder of Dyson company

"However, though we have tried very hard throughout the development process, we simply can no longer see a way to make it commercially viable", he said in an email to staff. In the fall of past year, it announced it was building the vehicle at a plant in Singapore, with the first auto expected to be available in 2021.

The two-storey facility that Dyson had announced in October 2018 to be used for the manufacture of its electric cars will be used for the making of other products like hair-dryers, vacuum cleaners or fans.

"Our battery will benefit Dyson in a profound way and take us in exciting new directions", he added. Much of that money has already been spent and Dyson said it would use the site for other projects.

There were enough vacancies to absorb most of the employees into Dyson's business, he said.

But in an email on Thursday, Sir James revealed that Dyson was closing electric vehicle facilities both in the United Kingdom and Singapore. Over time, Dyson even spoke of three electric vehicles to start by 2021 but those plans have now been crushed.

"This is a challenging time for our colleagues and I appreciate your understanding and sensitivity as we consult with those who are affected".

Hundreds of IS supporters escape in Syria, officials say
Four Turkish soldiers have been killed since the beginning of the offensive, including two who were killed in Syria's northwest. Turkey on Saturday said 459 YPG fighters had been "neutralised" since the operation began, a term that commonly means killed.

Dyson will continue its GBP 2.5 billion investment program into new technology and grow its new University. Development dollars will focus on manufacturing solid-state batteries, sensing technologies, vision systems, robotics, machine learning, and AI.

The company had planned to open an electric vehicle factory in 2021-Singapore's Economic Development Board says the impact on the country will be minimal since the cancellation comes at a relatively early stage of development. The cancelled launch however does not affect the future endeavours of the firm as James has announced that the firm will continue expansion at Malmesbury, Hullavington, Singapore and other global locations. "It is neutral, with stable politics, and policy planners who think and execute for the long term".

But in an email to the firm's employees Sir James said that it the vehicle would not reach production as it was not "commercially viable".

"Singapore could position itself to ensure that when there's an upturn again, it can ride on it..."

But the closure of the project indicates it underestimated the complexity and cost of starting a auto company from scratch.

Elon Musk says Tesla owners will soon be able to customize horn and movement sounds.
