Part of Hard Rock Hotel under construction in New Orleans collapses

WWL-TV shows the scene after a large portion of the Hard Rock Hotel which is under construction suddenly collapsed Oct. 12 2019 in New Orleans

The city's fire chief says at least 3 people are unaccounted for - all of whom are reportedly contractors who were working on-site.

"This remains a very fluid and very unsafe situation, and every few minutes something is falling off of this building", Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards said. There are three people confirmed missing.

One person was killed, 18 were driven to local hospitals for treatment and three were still missing, according to New Orleans Fire Superintendent Timothy McConnell and EMS Director Dr. Emily Nichols.

A construction project turned into a disaster when the top floors of a Hard Rock Hotel in New Orleans collapsed, leaving at least one person dead and the danger of another collapse a possibility.

McConnell added that three people believed to be in the area of the building when it collapsed have not been located. A crane that was dislodged during the collapse is still in place but unsupported, according to officials.

Dramatic video of the incident showed the crane falling into the street as debris billowed into the air.

"Please avoid the area & listen to public safety officials", the New Orleans Office of Homeland Security said on Twitter. The rubble slid off the side of the building in insane video captured by onlookers in the street. Led by Florida-based Hard Rock International, the development called for 350 hotel rooms on the site of the former Woolworth Department Store. Plans were unveiled past year.
