Nobel Peace Prize Awarded to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed

Nobel Peace Prize Awarded to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed

The committee acknowledged that "many challenges remain unsolved" in Ethiopia, Africa's second most populous country, where ongoing ethnic violence as well as conflict over land and resources have displaced millions of people.

Awol Allo, a fellow Ethiopian and an associate professor of law at Keele University in Britain, said Abiy deserved the prize for his role in ending the 20-year war between Ethiopia and Eritrea - a largely pointless war over disputed border territory that came at a huge financial and human cost to both countries.

"The prize is also meant to recognise all the stakeholders working for peace and reconciliation in Ethiopia and in the East and Northeast African regions", they said.

"This victory and recognition is a collective win for Ethiopians, and a call to strengthen our resolve in making Ethiopia - the new horizon of hope - a prosperous nation for all", the statement read.

The award consists of a gold medal, a diploma, and nine million Swedish kronor (around $912,000 or 828,000 euro).

"In close cooperation with the President of Eritrea, Abiy Ahmed quickly worked out the principles for a peace agreement to end the long no peace stalemate between the two countries".

The Norwegian Nobel Institute could also have chosen to acknowledge United Nations' World Food Program, or the joint leadership of two prime ministers - Greece's Alexis Tsipras and North Macedonia's Zoran Zaev - who brought an end to 30 years of acrimony between their nations.

Now, all of this has come to light and it appears that Warren has been claiming to be a victim when the facts say differently. And then that summer - I actually didn't have the education courses, so I was on an 'emergency certificate, ' it was called".

Mr Ahmed beat 300 other nominees, comprising of 223 individuals and 78 organisations, to take home the prize - the fourth largest tally since 1901 when the award was first introduced.

The annual, highly-anticipated prize is given by the Nobel Committee to the individual or group who is made a decision to have done the most to advance the cause of world peace.

The prize, worth nine million Swedish crowns, or around $900,000, will be presented in Oslo on December 10.

The 2019 prize was awarded to Austrian novelist Peter Handke, a choice that has sparked outrage because of his vocal support of Serbs during the bloody collapse of the former Yugoslavia.

Achievements in Medicine, Physics and Chemistry have already been honoured and the Economics Prize will wrap up the 2019 Nobel prize season on October 14.
