Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrives in Russian Federation for two-day bilateral visit

India offers billions in credit & investments for Russia’s Far East development

Politically, there are no disagreements between Russian Federation and India, so the discussion between the two strategic partners will focus on economic matters, said Alexei Kupriyanov, an analyst with the Institute of World Economy and International Relations.

"It would be a continuation of the dialogue we have been having between me and president Putin in various other forums" the prime minister said ahead of his meeting with Putin on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) now held in Russia's Vladivostok. "Over the next 2 days, bilateral meeting with President Putin, participation at Eastern Economic Forum & meetings with other world leaders on the agenda". This demonstrates the friendly relations between the people of our two countries.

Ahead of his visit, in his departure statement, Prime Minister said his visit to Vladivostok is the first-ever by an Indian Prime Minister to the Far East Region of Russian Federation and it underlines the desire on the both sides to strengthen the bonds of robust bilateral relations.

After his arrival, Modi visited the Zvezda shipbuilding complex with Putin.

PMModi said,"You've announced that I'll be awarded with Russia's highest civilian award. It's a matter of honour for the 1.3 billion Indians", he said.

Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale, briefing reporters on Modi's visit, said the possibility of opening a maritime route, connecting Chennai with Vladivostok, will also be explored as it could link Europe as well through the arctic route. Gokhale said India is looking at Russian Federation as a major source of hydrocarbons so as to end its complete dependency on the Gulf region.

Both sides agreed on a five-year road map in the energy sector with focus on Indian investment in Russian oil fields and transportation of energy to India and Russian investment in the downstream energy sector in India. He is scheduled to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday. The two leaders are expected to discuss a number of key regional issues, including the Afghan peace process and situation in the Gulf region.

The Eastern Economic Forum is an global forum held each year in Vladivostok for the goal of encouraging foreign investment in the Russian Far East.

They are also expected to explore ways to enhance cooperation while working in multilateral organisations like Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, BRICS (Brazil-Russia-India-China and South Africa).

Ahead of his visit to Russia, Modi said he looked forward to discussing regional and worldwide issues of mutual interest with President Putin. "Therefore, it is very easy for me to express my opinion to him", Modi said. The PM also explained the manner in which false and misleading information was given on this matter and PM Modi thanked Russian Federation and President Putin for his very clear and strong support to India on this issue.

The meeting will take place later today.
