Facebook opens up face recognition, discontinues 'tag' function

Facebook now asks for consent to scan your

Tag Suggestion, on the other hand used face recognition only to suggest a user to tag friends in photos.

Use of facial recognition technology in public spaces is also under the spotlight in the United Kingdom, after privacy watchdog the Information Commissioner's Office said it was "deeply concerned about the growing use of facial recognition technology".

THE SOCIAL NETWORK Facebook is making its controversial facial recognition feature opt-in by default.

Narayanan noted that with Facebook's rollout of the face recognition tool to those who did not previously have it, they'll see a notice in their News Feed about how the tool works and how it's used by the company.

Facebook announced Tuesday it will make it easier for users to turn off automatic facial recognition, after a government regulator had called the company's practice "deceptive".

In addition to suggesting photos you might be in, opting in to face recognition also means Facebook will keep a lookout for anyone else on the service pretending to be you. In June of the year 2011, we were already saying things like "Facebook has had a facial recognition system for awhile now".

Trump to London Mayor: 'Stay Out of Our Business'

The brand new Face Recognition setting will substitute Tag Suggestions, which ostensibly notified if somebody uploaded a photograph of you (or who Facebook presumed was you) and supplied to tag you in it mechanically.

Privacy advocates have questioned this feature for failing to let people know it was storing their biometric data.

'If you do not currently have the face recognition setting and do nothing, we will not use face recognition to recognize you or suggest tags, ' Facebook now says. And the company said it doesn't sell its technology or share your face-recognition information with third parties.

Facebook has said that these changes have already begun rolling out to users around the world.

Data privacy has been in the public eye for some time, with a spotlight on social media giants like Facebook.

The lawsuit by IL users accused the company of violating the state's Biometric Information Privacy Act, claiming it illegally collected and stored biometric data of millions of users without their consent.
