The suspected shooter was killed by police, according to the Dayton Police Department.

OH authorities said that a gunman opened fire in a busy district in Dayton early Sunday morning, resulting in nine deaths and at least 26 people injured.

The suspect, who was shot and killed by responding officers, has not yet been identified.

The shooting began early Sunday around 1 a.m. ET in the Oregon District, which is part of the Dayton downtown area.

She said the suspect was wearing body armour and was armed with a rifle firing.223-calibre rounds with high-capacity ammunition magazines.

The mayor said at a press conference Sunday morning that 26 people have been injured and are at local hospitals. At one point Sunday morning, so many people used the phrase "another shooting" it became one of the nation's top 10 topics.

"Fran and I are absolutely heartbroken over the awful attack that occurred this morning in Dayton, the statement said".

Police had warned earlier in the day that those who continued past the pre-approved protest route would be breaking the law. His arrest prompted about 100 protesters to surround a police station to demand his release, television footage showed.

"I really want to - think about that minute".

President Donald Trump tweeted the "reports are very bad, many killed", adding that he had spoken to Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to "pledge total support of Federal Government".

However, the FBI is investigating claims the alleged gunman posted a manifesto citing the mosque attacks not long before the attacks. The motive for the shooting was not immediately clear. The force later confirmed on Twitter there were officers in the area at the time of the incident and they were able to "put an end to it quickly".

No officers were injured, Carper said.

Miami Valley Hospital spokeswoman Terrea Little said 16 victims have been received at the hospital, but she couldn't confirm their conditions. She did not provide further information on their injuries.

Elizabeth Long, spokeswoman at Kettering Health Network, which operates several Dayton area hospitals including Kettering Medical Center and Grandview Medical Center told CNN that 13 people were taken to three of the network's hospitals, many with gunshot wounds to the "lower extremities". "People that were shot, hit, innocent people - we can't get home to our families now, and those people aren't going home to their families either".
