Khawaja ruled out of WC with hamstring injury

Usman Khawaja

Khawaja was troubled by a problem to his left hamstring in the 10-run defeat to South Africa on Saturday, a result which meant the defending champions will take on tournament hosts England at Edgbaston on Thursday.

"The ICC received the relevant paperwork this morning (July 10) from Cricket Australia to apply to replace Khawaja who has sustained a hamstring injury which has ruled him out of further participation in the event", the ICC said in a statement.

As injured batsman Usman Khawaja walked gingerly to the crease in a courageous bid to complete Australia's unlikely run chase against South Africa, it became clear the defending champions were going to great lengths to avoid a Cricket World Cup semifinal against archrival England.

"It doesn't get much bigger than that, Australia v England in the World Cup semi-finals".

"He deserves it. He was so unlucky not to be in the initial squad after what he'd done to help us get to that point".

Australia will call on Peter Handscomb for the first time in over three months when they take on England in the World Cup semi-final.

"They've been together for four years", said Langer.

Handscomb, who was representing Australia A in England, is coming on the back of scores 64, 28* and 57.

He would eventually be honored for this activism, receiving an award from then-Secretary of Veteran Affairs James Peake in 2009. His campaign became a cultural argument against Mexicans as much as it was an economic one for blue-collar Americans.

The tournament's official website quoted Langer as saying, "I tell you the truth, Peter Handscomb will definitely play in the match, 100 %".

Luckily for Australia, both Wade and Marsh may be very useful additions to the team.

Their meeting earlier in the tournament at Lord's saw Australia prevail but England have since rebounded by beating India and New Zealand and Finch knows his side must regroup quickly.

Separately, Rohit Sharma became the first player to hit five centuries in a single World Cup while his opening partner K.L. Rahul also struck a century as India topped the standings after cantering to a seven-wicket win in their final group match against Sri Lanka on Saturday at Headingley.

"He's a real seasoned pro and he's had an unbelievable 12 months or so in domestic cricket. It was an overhang into the Lord's game and then when we came here we managed to produce something similar to the cricket we have been playing over the last four years and that was really encouraging".

Justin Langer confirms Usman Khawaja's replacement: The Australian coach was vocal about Usman Khawaja's replacement vs England. "He's got good temperament, he plays spin well, he's on top of his game, so Pete will definitely play".

Stoinis picked up a side strain in Australia's loss to India before he passed a fitness test ahead of the Bangladesh tie at Trent Bridge.

"I feel like there's a very special thing just around the corner for us Australian cricketers and the whole Australian public, to be honest".
