How US Women's Soccer Is Used to Prop Up the Men

Alex Morgan and other members of the U.S. team celebrate with the trophy after winning the Women's World Cup

The world champion women's team members - who were honored Wednesday in a ticker-tape parade in New York City - will earn a maximum of $260,869 each after winning the World Cup and going on a victory tour.

The USWNT, which won its fourth World Cup crown on Sunday, has been fighting for equal pay for some time.

Now, it's the women of 2019's turn.

Fans of the World Cup champion USA women's national soccer team chanted "Equal Pay!" as Cordeiro spoke at a celebration of the team at New York's City Hall. From there, the parade will move north up Broadway to City Hall. In the celebratory rally after their victory, she used another expletive, screaming, "New York City, you're all the motherf**king best!" at the audience.

"She just stands there, and she just strokes the ball in, and that's something, I mean, it's, she's a remarkable woman", Sykes continued. "The women's soccer team plays the same game that the men's soccer players play - only better". Finally, in 1966, Mayor Lindsay swept into office on an anti-parade platform: that year, he announced his administration would discontinue ticker-tape parades in favor of more formal celebrations.

After all 28 members of the team received keys to the city, Rapinoe acknowledged the tension and defended Cordeiro during a speech of her own.

The Department of Sanitation said it has assigned 350 workers to parade cleanup, with trucks, backpack blowers and brooms at their disposal.

It is also the first women's soccer team to reach three back-to-back finals and the only one to win a record four World Cup trophies (1991, 1999, 2015, 2019).

The statement incurred an accusatory response from Mr Trump: "Megan should never disrespect our Country, the White House, or our Flag, especially since so much has been done for her and the team". "Finish the job! We haven't yet invited Megan or the team, but I am now inviting the TEAM, win or lose", Mr. Trump tweeted then. Rapinoe has said she wouldn't be going to the White House.

"Despite the fact that these female and male players are called upon to perform the same job responsibilities on their teams and participate in worldwide competitions for their single common employer, the USSF, the female players have been consistently paid less money than their male counterparts", the lawsuit said, per ESPN.

In addition, under the women's new recent bargaining agreement, female players earn "attendance bonuses, payment for commercial appearances and per diems" that are equal to what male players could earn. Allie Long, a midfielder from Northport, New York, posted on Twitter about returning to her home state.

The bill introduced by Manchin would disallow federal funds from being appropriated to help support any host city, or state or local agency participating in World Cup arrangements, until such time as the U.S. Soccer Federation "agrees to provide equitable pay" to its men's and women's teams.
