Patriots, Steelers interested in signing Golden Tate

Grading the Move Giants’ decision to sign Golden Tate makes little sense

Tate was the best receiver still available to sign in free agency.

Less than 48 hours after agreeing to trade away their star wide receiver, NY has reached an agreement on a four-year deal with former Eagles WR Golden Tate, his agents at CAA Football announced on Twitter Thursday evening. And the Giants certainly had a need at the position after dealing Beckham to the Browns. For his career, Tate, who will turn 31 before his first season with the Giants, has 611 catches for 7,214 yards and 38 touchdowns in his career. Tate has since played for the Lions and very briefly - after a midseason trade - for the Eagles. He ended up having a down year split between the two franchises, totaling 795 yards and four touchdowns, which might have affected his market. After trading away Beckham, it certainly looked like the Giants wanted to rebuild. The deal includes $23 million in fully guaranteed money. It's a curious roster fit given that the Giants already have Sterling Shepard in the slot and lots of short-range receivers such as Saquon Barkley and Evan Engram. At 30, this is likely the last big contract Tate will command.

As early as Wednesday afternoon, sources told CLNS Media that free agent wide receiver Adam Humphries had second thoughts about picking Tennessee over an opportunity to play with Tom Brady and the Patriots. That much is clear.
