16-Year-Old Swedish Climate Change Activist Nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg attends a protest rally in Hamburg Germany Friday

Young Derry students at a number of Derry schools will tomorrow leave their classrooms in a staged "strike" to attend a protest on climate change.

"I think all the striking around the world will let politicians and lawmakers know that they have to do something because it is falling down the list of priorities".

RTÉ's Education Correspondent Emma O'Kelly met some Dublin students who are intent on protesting on Friday. It's estimated that hundreds of thousands of students will take part.

"We are calling on all students to join us to take action on our future!"

Borrowing a page from the youth activist playbook put to wide use past year, when students across the country walked out of school and called for increasing gun restrictions, Din and other students across the country hope a strike from school will focus attention on their demands for immediate action to address climate change.

It's not the first time schoolkids have ditched class for protests in the streets - in November, students filled arcades and city squares, defying calls by the Prime Minister to stay in school, to call for an end to political inertia on climate policy.

Facebook is down and Instagram is struggling
Right now, news outlets aren't sure how you're getting to this article because Facebook drives so much traffic. It is not known if this is a planned outage, a problem with their servers, or if the service is under attack.

One of the strike organisers, Year 13 student Molly Doyle said she believes the strike is the best way to create awareness of the situation.

When asked what she feared most about the potential of growing up in a world that does little or nothing to curtail carbon pollution, Din hardly wanted to consider what that future would look like. The youth: this is the world we will need to grow up in.

Blue- and white-collar workers are being mobilised across the Flemish-Francophone divide, after an appeal from the Youth For Climate campaign, which has organised weekly demonstrations of up to 35,000 youths since January. People did die, are dying and will die because of it, but we can and will stop this madness'.

Maybe we're at the beginning of a new era.

I hope that you will be awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace. "Everyone is aware of it, thanks to the students".

The Climate Reality Project, founded and chaired by Mr. Gore, has thrown its support behind the Youth Climate Strike, a one-day walk-out aimed at drumming up support for "radical legislative action", including the Green New Deal.
