Senate votes to end USA support of Saudi-led Yemen war

The Senate has voted to end US support for the Saudi Arabian-led coalition's war in Yemen, bringing Congress one step closer to a unprecedented rebuke of President Donald Trump's foreign policy. The measure passed with 54 for and 46 against. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., the resolution's author, told reporters before the vote. They were: Lee, Susan Collins of Maine, Steve Daines of Montana, Jerry Moran of Kansas, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Rand Paul of Kentucky and Todd Young of Indiana. Its backers have argued that USA involvement in the conflict violates the constitutional requirement that Congress alone can authorize participation in war.

"We have the opportunity to cast the historical vote which will end the most horrific war on the planet right now, where 85,000 kids have already starved to death, and stop following the lead of a despotic, murderous regime in Saudi Arabia", Sen. "Lastly and not leastly important, the United States Congress is going to reassert its constitutional responsibility over issues of war that has been abdicated to presidents - Democrats and Republicans - for too many years".

The Yemen War Powers resolution also serves as a vehicle to pressure Trump to condemn the Saudi government over the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, which USA intelligence agencies have pinned on Saudi prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Resolution opponents argued that support for the Saudi-led coalition is not an appropriate use of the war powers act limiting the president's ability to send troops into action, because US forces are not actively engaged in fighting.

The White House has threatened a veto, calling the measure "flawed" and saying it would harm bilateral relationships in the region and hurt Washington's ability to fight extremism.

Lawmakers from both parties are not only repulsed by the bloodshed in Yemen, they are also upset over Trump's tepid response to the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi inside the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul in October.

The Senate unanimously agreed to retain similar language today by voice vote with an amendment from Sen.

"We should not use this specific vote on a specific policy decision as some proxy for all the Senate's broad feelings about foreign affairs".

New Italian law requires students to be vaccinated or face repercussions
Under the law, children over six can not be banned from school but their parents will be fined up to €500 (£425). The action takes place after months of national debate over imposed vaccination.

"We should not be associated with a bombing campaign that the United Nations tells us is likely a gross violation of human rights", Murphy said on the Senate floor Wednesday.

McConnell argued the Yemen resolution "will not enhance America's diplomatic leverage" and will make it more hard for the U.S.to help end the conflict in Yemen and minimize civilian casualties.

Romney said the US now provides limited support to the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen, including intelligence-sharing and advice on compliance with the laws of war.

"Peace envoys are telling us they want deeper USA engagement in this situation", Risch said in a statement following the vote.

The Yemen vote could be only the first of two major setbacks for Trump this week, as senators are due to vote tomorrow on a resolution disapproving of his use of his emergency powers to pay for a wall on the border with Mexico, even though Congress has not approved it.

With the Democrats in control, the House passed its own version of the resolution in February, but a procedural issue meant the House must vote on the Senate's version of the measure.

The war has also worsened the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, where millions face starvation.

The measure is co-sponsored by Sen.
