A host of opposition leaders including Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar, National Conference's Farooq Abdullah, CPI-M General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Trinamool Congress' Dinesh Trivedi and Loktantrik Janata Dal's Sharad Yadav participated in the rally and extended their support to the farmers.

Almost 35,000 farmers from across the country had gathered in the national capital to press for their demands that included debt relief and remunerative prices for their produce.

They came from various States, including Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh.

Denied permission by police to march to Parliament, around 35,000 farmers from across the country converged near Parliament Street Police station in New Delhi on Friday, where their leaders addressed the protesters.

Gaining support from the Left and a number of farmer groups, they marched to Ramlila Maidan from five different locations.

Banded under the All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee (AIKSCC), which claims to be an umbrella body of 207 organisations of farmers and agricultural workers, numerous farmers came in trains and other packed into buses and other modes of transport.

"When 3.5 lakh crore of loans of the biggest industrialists of the nation can be waived off by the Modi government, then the loans of millions of farmers will also have to be waived off", thundered Gandhi.

The two-day protest march in Delhi that was organised by various farmers' groups from different states ended on Friday with opposition leaders hitting out at the Modi government for ignoring the agrarian crisis in the country.

"It's a shame that the Government doesn't have any time for those who feed us."

But political analysts and farm economists say Modi will find it hard to repeat that next time.

As per the records kept by an NGO named "Raitu Swaraj Vedica" that works in Telangana, in the last four years, 4,200 farmers have committed suicide after not being able to pay loans, but families of only 1,200 such farmers have received government aid. The PM promised fair prices, a bonus and an increase in MSP.

"They also face a enormous water crisis and want the Swaminathan Commission report to be implemented", Sainath said. While protesting they held banners against farmers' suicide taking place across the country.

Jamun Thakur, a farmer from Parri village of Bihar's Darbhanga district, said he arrived in the city at 8 am Thursday with over 2,000 farmers mostly associated with AIKS. They were stopped near the Parliament Street police station.

Delhi traffic police has issued an advisory.

"Forces were deployed along the border areas and no tractor-trolley was allowed to get into Delhi", Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Ghaziabad, Upendra Agarwal said.
