Belgium win World Cup of Golf for first time

Belgium won the World Cup of Golf in Melbourne

Overnight leaders by five strokes, the young pair survived a late wobble in the final round foursomes at Metropolitan Golf Club, with a bogey on the 15th trimming their lead to two shots over Australia's Marc Leishman and Cameron Smith.

Abraham Ancer, who won the Australian Open by five strokes last week, finished a fine trip Down Under with Roberto Diaz, the pair combining for a final round six-under at the Sandbelt course.

They endured a rollercoaster back nine - mixing four birdies with three bogeys - but they closed out their victory.

Thomas Pieters and Thomas Detry signed for a 68 and at 23 under, the pair earned a three-shot from Australia and Mexican duo Roberto Diaz and last week's Australian Open victor Abraham Ancer (66).

Danish defending champions Thorbjorn Olesen and Soren Kjeldsen carded a 65 to tie for fourth alongside Canada's Adam Hadwin and Nick Taylor, six behind Belgium. Greece finished last among the 28 teams on 19-over 307.

"I said 'Let's play like we're two behind", said Peters. "We were on a college team (University of Illinois) together as amateurs in the United States and we are great friends".

The more established Pieters, a three-time European Tour victor and Ryder Cup player, said that winning the World Cup was not something players normally have on their bucket list.

"It was a long back nine" Pieters said while surrounded by family, friends and fans, some with Belgian flags stuck on their heads, just off the 18th green.

The Australians and the Mexicans earn US$480,000 per player for their share of second place.

"They (Belgium) didn't really give us a chance". Detry said. "It's not really something you put on the list, but when it happens, you qualify for it, you play for it, you play with your best mate and it's kind of a dream come true". I had a few good shots and Anirban holed a lot of good putts.

The Belgium duo, playing two groups behind, could not ignore the mighty cheer that went up from the gallery.

The Belgians made bogey at the par-3 12th and suddenly the Australians were within just two strokes, but Leishman pushed his short birdie try at 16 right, killing the locals' momentum and ultimately any hopes of hoisting the trophy.

Belgium shot 71 on Friday, tied for the low score of the day and one of only four scores under par, and shared the lead going into the third round.
