Why Cannes Film Festival Has Banned Netflix Movies From Competition

Cannes Film Festival Shuts Netflix And Other Streamers Out Of Palme D’Or Competition

Cannes faced backlash a year ago after including "Okja" and "The Meyerowitz Stories" in its line-up, despite the fact that both films - which streamed exclusively on Netflix - received critical acclaim.

The news was shared by festival director Thierry Fremaux in an interview with Variety, saying the art of taking selfies on red carpet is "ridiculous".

The head of the Cannes film festival said Friday he was banning selfies on the red carpet, claiming they caused "unwanted disorder" before premieres.

In other news - which will be welcomed by surely every other non-narcissistic person - selfies on the red carpet have also been banned. Other than that, films produced by and streamed on platforms such as Netflix will not be featured in the competition section. "We go to Cannes to see movies, not to take selfies". "On the red carpet, the trivial aspect and the slowing down provoked by the disorder which these selfies create tarnishes the quality of [the red carpet experience] and of the festival as a whole", he said.

UK's Prince Harry and fiancee Meghan invite 600 guests to wedding
Though, the official letter made headlines after people noticed that the Queen simply referred to Meghan by her legal name, Rachel Meghan Markle .

As Netflix films, they found themselves at the center of the storm that embroiled the entire competition, along with one hard question: Should Netflix films be allowed in competition at Cannes in the first place? Why not just have an embargo?

"I can't help thinking Cannes is saving up grief for itself with this!"

He said that the rival Berlin film festival "successfully enforces an embargo between morning press screenings and evening premieres. Everybody wins. Why can't Cannes do this?"

Lodge said the change would ultimately lead to publicists showing films to select critics ahead of time - "not quite the great leveller that Fremaux has in mind". While the streamer will still be able to screen movies at Cannes, it will not be in the running for the festival's top prize, the Palme D'Or. Interestingly, in an earlier interview, the festival's director had hinted that a major change was in the offing.
