Women's 3-on-3 event to debut at NHL All-Star weekend

Report: Women’s 3-on-3 scrimmage planned for NHL All-Star Weekend

At last year's All-Star Game in San Jose, California, US national team forward Kendall Coyne Schofield became the first woman to compete in the NHL All-Star skills competition, taking part in the fastest skater competition as a late replacement.

The women selected to play in the All-Star weekend event are part of the Professional Women's Hockey Players Association, a pool of players who are boycotting professional hockey this year in an effort to find a more sustainable league.

THE National Hockey League (NHL) is increasing its promotion of women's hockey by adding a three-on-three game between USA and Canadian national team members to its All-Star festivities later this month in Saint Louis.

The report says the league expects to announce all the details of the new event and a new element for skills competition later this week.

Canada three-on-three scrimmage, which should be a great opportunity for some of North America's best players (and women's hockey's greatest rivalry) to get some love on a big stage.

The NHL is also adding a new event, called "Shooting Stars", in which eight NHL players and two of the female players will shoot pucks from the stands at targets on the ice.

It's unclear when the scrimmage will be held during the weekend of festivities.

National team players from the US and Canada will be split into two 10-player teams and compete in a 20-minute 3-on-3 scrimmage during the skills competition.

The addition of a women's three-on-three game is seen as the next step in the league's bid to promote women's hockey. The All-Star skills competition is at 7 p.m. January 24.

The PWHPA has since launched a series of barnstorming tours around North America, with its most recent stop in Toronto this past weekend. The NWHL is in the middle of its fifth season, with teams made up of patchwork rosters. In October, Rylan went so far as to say the NWHL has proven it can be viable without National Hockey League support and a lack of high-profile players.
