What's next for the Trump impeachment inquiry?

Jerry Nadler

Turley pointed out that the president was being accused of "obstruction" merely for availing himself of the rights he had to approach the courts, both to protect the powers of the executive and to protect his own particular interests.

That's how President Donald Trump describes the House Intelligence Committee's impeachment report.

Another Democratic witness, Pamela Karlan of Stanford Law School, issued an opening statement in which she said the evidence shows Trump delayed providing foreign military assistance meant to limit "Russian aggression" in order to "strong-arm a foreign leader into smearing" one of his domestic political opponents.

As the next stage of the impeachment process is underway, GOP lawmakers on Capitol Hill are speaking out against Democrats for their ongoing efforts. Turley said. "This is not how you impeach an American president".

Then-president-elect Donald Trump calls out to media as he and former NY mayor Rudy Giuliani pose for photographs as Giuliani arrives at the Trump National Golf Club Bedminster clubhouse, November 20, 2016, in Bedminster, New Jersey. According to the testimony presented to the House, the solicitation sought to gain an advantage that was personal to the president.

One of the scholars told Wednesday's hearing that Trump had perpetrated one of the gravest political transgressions in USA history.

But the fact that some government officials did their duty doesn't excuse the president's attempt to deprive the House of testimony to which it was entitled.

Turley tells members of the House Judiciary Committee that he thinks the impeachment proceedings are being rushed for no reason. Republicans called Jonathan Turley, a George Washington University law professor, to appear. (The seat eventually went to Justice Sonia Sotomayor.) To date, she has not written about or publicly commented on the Trump impeachment inquiry. In an opinion piece in The Hill, Turley called Trump's pressure in Ukraine "highly inappropriate", but also criticized Democrats for pursuing "an impeachment that seems created to fail with an incomplete and conflicted record".

"One can oppose President Trump's policies or actions but still conclude that the current legal case for impeachment is not just woefully inadequate, but in some respects, dangerous".

Trump downplays urgency for China deal as trade risks roar back
Trump said a deal with China would only happen if he wanted it to, and he thought he was doing very well in the talks. Among the biggest risks to emerge was a possible trade conflict with Europe.

"It's of no merit", Trump said at a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Watford, England.

The remaining two witnesses called by Democrats on the panel also classified Trump's conduct as categorically impeachable.

Congressman Doug Collins, the Judiciary panel's top Republican, piled on, calling the inquiry a "railroad job" wasting the American public's time.

Collins faced a scolding, however, from one of the professors when he insinuated that they have not followed the twists and turns of the impeachment process.

The impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump moved to the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday where four professors of constitutional law are providing expert testimony regarding the historical and constitutional grounds for removing a sitting president. "The fact that we can easily transpose the articles of impeachment against Nixon onto the actions of this president speaks volumes - and that does not even include the most serious national security concerns and election interference concerns at the heart of this president's misconduct".

Trump has denied doing anything wrong.

"At the end of the day, there's still no impeachable offense".

If they pass as expected, Trump would then stand trial for removal in the Republican-controlled Senate, where he is likely to be exonerated.
