Woman rescued from Australian Outback after going missing two weeks ago

Phu Tran is from South Australia

An Australian woman is thankful she's now safe and sound after a almost two-week ordeal lost in the Outback, but the search continues for her still-missing companions.

For about a week, the group remained near the water, boiling it or sifting it with a shirt to survive, Superintendent Pauline Vicary of the Northern Territory Police told reporters in Alice Springs on Monday.

Her two companions remain missing after their dual cab ute got bogged in a riverbed southwest of Alice Springs nearly two weeks ago.

Ms McBeath-Riley found water about 1.5km north of the auto.

"Significantly, she seems to have stayed where the water is and has been drinking, and that's probably what pushed her to continue", Vicary told Australian Broadcasting Corp.

She was taken to Alice Springs Hospital to be treated for dehydration and exposure, but her companions are yet to be located. Her companions began trekking 20 kilometers (12 miles) toward a highway on Thursday, planning to avoid the desert heat, which came close to 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) in recent days, by walking at night and carrying up to 7 liters (15 pints) of water.

Ms McBeath-Riley and her partner, Claire Hockridge, are locals of Alice Springs while Phu Tran lives in Adelaide. But anxious that no one was looking for them, Mrs. Hockridge and Mr. Tran chose to venture north with a satellite navigation device and a compass.

When she was rescued, she thought the pair - who had a Global Positioning System and compass with them - would have earlier reached the highway. That was my immediate thought.

McBeath-Riley told reporters the group initially survived by digging holes under their vehicle to shelter from the sun.

An NT Police spokesman said the search party hoped to find Ms Hockridge and South Australian Mr Tran now. "It's quite a diverse terrain - there's sandy dunes, there's hard clay, there's areas of dense trees but there is also rocks and ranges in the area as well".

Ms Vicary said the search area has been narrowed down significantly.

ABC News reports that they remained by the auto for three days - with supplies made up of six litres of water, 10 cans of iced vodka, a packet of biscuits and some beef noodles. Unusual tire tracks spotted by a cattle station worker, as well as a note left inside the vehicle, provided a breakthrough for searchers.
