House Intel panel sets Tuesday vote on Trump impeachment report

President Donald Trump exits Air Force One on Dec. 1 2019 following a trip to his Mar-a Lago estate in Florida

(L-R) Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) stands next to House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) as he speaks to reporters following a closed-door hearing with the House Intelligence, Foreign Affairs and Oversight committees at the U.S. Capitol in Washington on November 4, 2019.

On this week's broadcast of "Fox News Sunday", House Judiciary Committee member Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) admitted just three days before the committee is going call witnesses at the impeachment hearings of President Donald Trump, their identities are being kept secret.

Schiff had also indicated that his committee was still open to receiving new witnesses or testimony as it began to draft the report, but it's unclear if any new information has become available since lawmakers departed for a one-week Thanksgiving recess.

The Democratic-led House of Representatives Judiciary Committee, tasked with considering charges known as articles of impeachment, had given Trump until 6 p.m. (2300 GMT) on Sunday to say whether he would dispatch a lawyer to take part in the judiciary panel's proceeding on Wednesday.

Trump, who denies claims of having tried to leverage aid to Ukraine to hurt former Vice President Joe Biden's chances for reelection, lashed out at Democrats on Twitter overnight, saying that impeachment hearings were timed to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation meetings in London on 3-4 December.

He said Schiff himself should be called to testify before the panel.

The GMB union said: 'Clearly this announcement will be a body blow to Npower workers across the UK. 'Npower's demise means there's no time to waste.

The House Judiciary Committee is slated to hold its first impeachment hearing on Wednesday, with a panel of constitutional experts explaining exactly what constitutes an impeachable offense, including defining the nebulous "high crime and misdemeanor" term specified in the Constitution. Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who will make the final decision, has not yet said whether the Republican president should be impeached.

A transcript of a July call between Trump and Ukraine's recently elected president Volodymyr Zelensky - released in September by the White House - is the centerpiece of their evidence. "That is his right", McClintock said on ABC's This Week.

McClintock said it is understandable that President Trump "is upset at the illegitimate process that we saw unfold in the Intelligence Committee", calling the impeachment inquiry a "quasi-judicial proceeding".

Collins, too, slammed the process, saying it was being rushed by Democrats. There is debate among Democrats about whether to keep the impeachment inquiry narrowly focused on the president's dealings with Ukraine, or whether to broaden the inquiry and probe potential instances of obstruction of justice by the president outlined in Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into 2016 election meddling.

Republicans have demanded that figures such as Biden's son Hunter Biden, who formerly sat on the board of a Ukrainian energy company, be called to testify. "I think they are trying to work out the details". We all would like to hear from Mick Mulvaney.

If the Democratic-controlled House votes to impeach, the proceedings would move to the Senate, where the Republicans hold a majority, for a trial to determine whether Trump should be convicted and removed as president. But Democratic lawmakers and aides say the committee is expected to have at least one more hearing, likely the second week of December, in which Democrats will present their case against Trump. Reaching that tally would require 20 Republicans to side with Democrats and vote to remove Trump from office.
