China sanctions United States over Hong Kong unrest

Protesters march to up pressure on Hong Kong government

As one part of the march ran into a police blockade, officers warned protesters not to proceed, saying they were straying from the permitted route.

China has long accused foreign groups and governments of fomenting the 6-month-old demonstrations in Hong Kong, singling out the USA, former colonial overlord Britain, and democratic, self-governing Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory to be annexed by force if necessary.

Many held up a hand to indicate the five demands of the movement and shouted "Five demands, not one less" and "Disband the police force". "Sometimes their actions are violent and aggressive, but we are more unhappy with the government's behaviour".

The rally started peacefully, with people flooding to the waterside neighbourhood by ferry and train.

The Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act, which the Senate and House passed, puts the special treatment that Hong Kong enjoys under USA law under tighter scrutiny linked to the extent of Hong Kong's autonomy from Beijing. One showed him standing atop a tank with "Trump" emblazoned on the front and side.

A top Hong Kong official said the government was looking into setting up an independent committee to review the handling of the crisis, in which they say clashes between Hong Kong and pro-Beijing camps have become increasingly violent since they began more than five months ago. Most left after police fired pepper balls and issued warnings. "I want the government to know that we are not happy with what they have done to our generation".

Lam has said she'll accelerate dialogue but has not yielded any ground since the vote.

Earlier on Sunday, hundreds of protesters waved American flags, with some donning Donald Trump logo hats and t-shirts, as they unfurled a banner depicting the US president standing astride a tank with a USA flag behind him.

Doncic gives Lakers cruel welcome to December, snapping win-streak
Alex Caruso added 10 points off the bench, with no other Lakers scoring in double figures on the night. And as will be a theme for the month of December, it's not going to get any easier from here.

A protester wears an American flag scarf during one of the rallies, appealing to U.S. President Donald Trump for his government's continued support.

Carrying yellow balloons and waving banners that read "No tear gas, save our children", the protesters streamed through the city's central business district towards government headquarters on the main Hong Kong island.

"A lot of parents are anxious that their children are affected, because their children are coughing, breaking out in rashes and so forth", said social worker and march organiser Leo Kong.

Foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said Monday NGOs, including the National Endowment for Democracy, Human Rights Watch, Freedom House, National Democratic Institute and International Republican Institute had acted "badly" during almost six-months of unrest in Hong Kong.

In the article published earlier yesterday, Bachelet urged authorities in Hong Kong to conduct "a proper independent and impartial judge-led investigation into reports of excessive use of force by the police".

China's mission to the United Nations said Bachelet's article "will only embolden the rioters to conduct more severe radical violence".

It said Bachelet made "inappropriate comments" on the situation in Hong Kong and that the Chinese side had lodged a strong protest in response.
