Elisabeth Moss Is Fighting for Her Life

Elizabeth Moss in the Invisible Man

Forget Tom Cruise's Mummy fiasco - cue the Tom Cruise scream! - because we just got our first look at Universal's new take on the classic Universal Monsters with the trailer for The Invisible Man. Today, Universal Pictures has released a first trailer for the film and you can check it out in the player below!

The Invisible Man is due to arrive in United Kingdom cinemas on 28 February 2020.

In the trailer for The Invisible Man, an attorney reads a statement from a deceased man named Adrian to his girlfriend, Cecilia (Elisabeth Moss). She escapes in the dead of night and disappears into hiding, aided by her sister (Harriet Dyer), their childhood friend (Aldis Hodge) and his teenage daughter (Storm Reid).

Purchase the original The Invisible Man film here. Producer Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Productions were given the Universal monsters to apply his low-priced horror approach to, as opposed to the flashier, expensive, action-adventure take that Cruise's Mummy had gone with.

Australian filmmaker Leigh Whannell (who directed the Saw and Insidious movies) wrote and directed The Invisible Man. As a fan of the Universal Monsters, I sure hope so.

The story introduces us to Cecilia Kass (Elisabeth Moss), trapped in a controlling and violent relationship with a brilliant and rich scientist.

In 2000, "Hollow Man", which starred Kevin Bacon, took a story route akin to Well's acclaimed fictional piece where a lead scientist volunteers to be the test subject of an invisibility experiment with consequences.

What matters is that Elisabeth Moss is here to be slowly driven insane by her abusive ex-husband turning invisible and being a nightmarishly creepy arsehole in this trailer, and it is really uncomfortably unnerving. The Invisible Man, which was in development as early as 2007, was supposed to star Johnny Depp but the project was scrapped in 2019.

Where The Mummy was bombastic and incredibly over-the-top (and I can only imagine what Depp's Invisible Man would have done while looking extra-weird), this movie seems grounded in a realism that's so horrifying because it hits close to home for many.
