Two Indian players arrested for match-fixing, took money for slow batting

Gautam is a popular name in Karnataka cricket circles and was instrumental in helping the Karnataka Ranji cricket team win back-to-back domestic trebles in 2013-14 and 2014-15. He shifted to Goa this season.

According to the Bengaluru Police, the two (Gautam and Kazi) were involved in fixing in the KPL 2019 finals between Bellary Tuskers and Hubli Tigers after accepting Rs 20 lakh each for slow batting.

It may be recalled that two days ago CCB had arrested Nishanth Singh Shekawat, a batsman playing for Bengaluru Blasters team in connection with an global betting scam in the Karnataka Premier League (KPL) 2018. Gautam also played for India A and has played for Royal Challengers Bangalore, Mumbai Indians, and Delhi Daredevils in the IPL.

"The CCB has made two important arrests in the KPL spot-fixing scandal", Sandeep Patil, the Joint Commissioner of Police, told ESPNcricinfo.

As many as six people have been arrested over the match-fixing scandal that was exposed to the recent arrest of Ali Ashfaq Thara recently. They were paid two million rupees ($28,000) for slow batting. Gautam has also played a Ranji match.

Gautam who has represented India A previously has played 94 first class matches scoring 4716 runs at an average of 41.4 scoring 10 hundreds and 24 fifties in the process. Three others including the owner of the Belagavi team, have been arrested in the past couple of months since the scandal came to light. Kazi has played a solitary game for RCB.

KPL authorities also banned the team Belagavi Panthers. Severe actions would be taken against each individual if they are found guilty.

The state cricket body said it has been extending all possible co-operation to the police in unearthing any such incidents and for taking appropriate action against those who have committed illegal acts.

"Once the news came out, we have terminated his (Gautam's) contract and we have written to BCCI as well regarding this".
