Medvedev into Shanghai Masters ATP final

Roger Federer has equalled Rafael Nadal's 381 victories at a Masters 1000 event

The next generation of youngsters made their mark at the Shanghai Masters as Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alexander Zverev knocked out former champions Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer respectively, booking their semi-final spots on Friday.

Russian Daniil Medvedev reached his sixth consecutive tour-level final after beating Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece in straight sets at the Shanghai Masters.

The number five seed Alexander Zverev of Germany will face the number eleven seed Matteo Berrettini of Italy in the semi-final of the Shanghai Masters on Saturday, October 12.

The conqueror of Djokovic, Tsitsipas, has struggled in recent months but found his form to produce a superb 3-6 7-5 6-3 victory - his second career win over Djokovic.

The Serb has opted not to play in Vienna or Basel, meaning he will drop 1600 points, elevating Nadal to world number one in the first week of November regardless of results in the final Masters of the year in Paris.

"He will always make it tricky for you like he did today with me, and you always got to play your best tennis to have a chance", Zverev said.

"The most important thing is to keep it going as long as I can".

Medvedev took a tense and nervy opening set on a tie-break and broke early in the second to seize control of the contest. Federer, who was given a warning for "unsportsmanlike conduct" at the end of the second set, vented at the umpire after not being told new balls were in play.

Medvedev has now seen off the 21-year-old - who defeated World No 1 Novak Djokovic on Friday - in all five of their matches.

Tsitsipas, ranked seventh in the world, has also qualified to make his debut at the ATP Finals.

"It's a great achievement, I'm proud of myself and, hopefully, I get the win tomorrow", said Medvedev.

"I was close to losing a lot of them but I think that's also the confidence and dynamic that I'm going through".

Roger Federer has equalled Rafael Nadal's incredible haul of 381 Masters 1000 match victories after a two-set victory of David Goffin.

"He's probably the best player in the world right now". Zverev may feel that, now that he has beaten Federer, the hard work is done, but the Italian has already proved his ability to handle the big occasion numerous times this year.

Fabio Fognini had said before his quarter-final loss to Medvedev that the latter was the worst opponent to play at the moment as he was "really dangerous", an assessment that former pro Thomas Johansson agreed with.
