Former Rep. Trey Gowdy joins Trump legal team

Fox News Terminates Trey Gowdy

Gowdy, 55, also emerged as a fierce defender of the president and critic of special counsel Robert Mueller's probe into Russian election meddling and the president's campaign.

The Hollywood Reporter noted, "Television networks covet former politicians to provide on-air analysis as contributors, but generally cut ties with them if they re-enter the political fray". Following several conflicting reports from an array of outlets, however, Washington Post White House reporter Josh Dawsey reported Tuesday evening that a senior White House official confirmed to him that "Trey Gowdy is on the Trump team".

Gowdy joined a string of GOP committee chairmen who made a decision to leave Congress as the GOP faced a challenging 2018 midterm election which resulted in the Democrats taking back the House of Representatives.

"I am even more convinced that the Federal Bureau of Investigation did exactly what my fellow citizens would want them to do when they got the information they got-and that it has nothing to do with Donald Trump", Gowdy told Fox News in May 2018. "His legal skills and his advocacy will serve the President well", Sekulow said.

"A lot of them have already made up their minds", he said in a September 27th Fox appearance during which he defended the July Trump-Ukraine phone call that eventually led to the impeachment inquiry.

Pelosi announced late last month that the House would formally launch an impeachment inquiry into Trump, alleging he abused his office by urging Ukraine's president to "look into" Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden.

Gowdy, 55, is best known for his dogged, two-year investigation of Hillary Clinton that accused the Obama administration of lethal mistakes leading up the Benghazi attacks but produced no "smoking gun" pointing to wrongdoing by the former secretary of state.

Recalling that comment, which has been circulating in recent days on social media, Bardella said he is flabbergasted that Gowdy is "joining forces with someone who is literally taking a wrecking ball to checks and balances" by refusing to cooperate with Congress on a host of investigations, including impeachment.

This led CNN producers to air footage from a 2012 Congressional hearing in which Gowdy blasted the Obama administration for what seems to be the very thing that the Trump administration is now doing.

"Trey's command of the law is well known and his service on Capitol Hill will be a great asset as a member of our team", Sekulow said.
