Blast Sets Iran Tanker On Fire Off Saudi Oil Leaks Into Sea State Media

The crew of the damaged Iranian oil tanker are safe, the situation aboard the vessel in the aftermath of the explosion is under control, according to media reports.

An explosion has set an Iranian oil tanker on fire near the Saudi port city of Jeddah, Iran's Students News Agency ISNA reported on Friday (Oct 11), adding that experts believed it was a "terrorist attack".

Yemeni Houthi rebels that fight Saudi troops since 2015 have claimed responsibility for the attack, but Riyadh and its ally Washington pinned the blame to Iran - a claim which it vehemently denied.

The U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet, which oversees the region, did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Associated Press.

Tension between Iran and Gulf states allied with the U.S. has been high for several months after the Donald Trump administration announced re-imposition of tough sanctions on Tehran.

The National Iran Oil Company said a supertanker called Sinopa was hit by two missiles around 60 miles from the port of Jeddah, leaving it badly damaged.

The latest assault saw Saudi Arabia's vital oil industry come under a drone-and-cruise-missile attack, halving the kingdom's output.

The state-run IRNA news agency, quoting Iran's National Iranian Tanker Co., identified the stricken vessel as the Sabity.

The United States and Saudi Arabia have also blamed Iran for attacks against six oil tankers in May and June, which Tehran also denied.

It said the attack happened early on Friday morning.
