Syrian opposition ready to combat terror with Turkey

Fighters of the Syrian Democratic Forces SDF march during a demonstration against possible Turkish military operation in their areas in Al-Qahtaniya Syria

US President Donald Trump has blown hot and cold since a surprise announcement on Sunday that Washington was pulling back 50 to 100 "special operators" from Syria's border with Turkey.

Given that those same Kurdish groups have fought alongside U.S. forces against the Islamic State movement in Syria, Trump's decision was seen by prominent figures of his own Republican party as a betrayal.

The troops had served as a buffer preventing a long-planned attack by Turkey against Kurdish forces, who were crucial in the campaign to defeat Islamic State (IS) but are viewed as "terrorists" by Ankara.

Trump sought to explain his position by stressing that Washington has an important relationship with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member and trading partner Turkey.

"There is massive bipartisan opposition in Congress, which you should see as a red line you should not cross".

Turkey's communications director, Fahrettin Altun, wrote in the Washington Post that Kurdish forces can either "defect" or Turkey will "have no choice but to stop them from disrupting our counter-Islamic State efforts".

Votel and Dent said the move "could not come at a worse time" and was made "without consulting USA allies or senior US military leadership".

The Kurdish-led SDF, which is holding thousands of ISIS fighters in several detention facilities in northeastern Syria, has warned that a Turkish incursion might lead to the resurgence of the extremists.

"All preparations for the operation have been completed", the Turkish Defence Ministry said.

Earlier Tuesday, Turkey placed a series of rocket launchers and artillery along the border with Syria, while military officials said they would not allow the creation of what they called a terror corridor along the Turkish border.

Iran, along with Russian Federation, are both key allies of Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime and both have troops stationed in Syria.

Yet, despite the social media diplomacy, US military officials said they expect a Turkish incursion is still likely and confirmed that they have repositioned about 50 USA special forces members, who had been operating along the Turkey-Syria border, out of harm's way.

On Monday, Trump said that getting the USA out of military conflicts was the reason he was elected president.

In its more than 30-year terror campaign against Turkey, the PKK - listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the US and the European Union - has been responsible for the deaths of some 40,000 people, including women, children and infants.

"Any unforced or unnecessary fighting by Turkey will be devastating to their economy and to their very fragile currency", the president said as he described the relationship between the two countries as "very good".

The statement said the mobilization would last for three days.

The Syrian Democratic Forces-a coalition of various Arab, Assyrian, Armenian, Turkmen and Chechen militias led by the Kurdish People's Protection Units, or YPG-has been America's most effective ally in the fight against ISIS.

The statement went on to say that "The United States Armed Forces will not support or be involved in the operation", and that US forces, "having defeated the ISIS territorial 'Caliphate, ' will no longer be in the immediate area". Turkey regards the YPG as indistinguishable from the militant Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which both Ankara and Washington consider a terrorist organization. Sean Robertson reiterated that any Turkish military action "would be a grave concern" for the USA because it would "undermine our shared interest of a secure northeast Syria and the enduring defeat of ISIS".

There are also signs other players in the region are waiting to take advantage of any Turkish-Kurdish conflict.

Turkish troops have crossed into Syria, a published report said Wednesday, citing information from a Turkish military official.

Russia's security council said it was important to avoid hindering the peace process in Syria.
