Southwest Airlines Pilots Sue Boeing Over 737 MAX

Southwest Pilots Sue Boeing Over Alleged Lost Wages From MAX Grounding

United States aerospace giant Boeing Company said Tuesday it delivered only five 737 aircraft in the third quarter 2019, 19 jets fewer than the figure reported in the previous quarter, due to an lingering impact of the global grounding of 737 MAX planes.

During the first nine months of the year, Boeing has delivered 302 jetliners, including 118 versions of the 737 and 33 for military customers.

US airplane manufacturer Boeing announced Tuesday that it had only delivered 26 planes in September, down 70% from a year earlier.

Governments and airlines around the world have grounded the Boeing 737 MAX aircrafts since March after two crashes within six months of each other - in October 2018 and March 2019 - that killed a total of 346 people. "The 737 MAX now is grounded worldwide because it is unsafe, unairworthy, and contrary to Boeing's representations, distinct from the 737 family of aircraft that preceded it, which SWAPA pilots have flown for years".

According to Tewolde, Ethiopian Airlines faced difficulties operating large Boeing 737 MAX, as it had to stop off at a second destination on flights from Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa to cities including Windhoek in Namibia and the Botswana capital Gaborone for refueling. "In doing so, Boeing abandoned sound design and engineering practices, withheld critical safety information from regulators and deliberately mislead (sic) its customers, pilots and the public about the true scope of design changes to the 737 MAX".

Boeing said it will fight the suit.

A further 14 people were arrested, including five Pakistani nationals and one Bangladeshi. An additional 22 Taliban fighters, including foreigners, were killed in the raid.

"As pilots, there is nothing more important to us than the safety of our passengers", said Captain Jonathan L. Weaks, President of SWAPA said in a press release announcing the lawsuit.

"We do not at this stage have any specific concerns. that would mean that we could not agree to a coordinated return to service", the EASA says.

FAA Administrator Steve Dickson told Reuters News Agency in September that the FAA would need about a month following the yet-to-be-scheduled certification test flight before the planes could return to service.

The FAA reiterated on Tuesday that it does not have a firm date for completing its review.

Southwest, with around 10,000 pilots represented by SWAPA, had 41 more MAX jets on order for this year alone. Boeing has expressed hope that the 737 MAX will be able to operate again before the end of this year, though the grounding forced Southwest to cancel about 180 daily flights through January 5.
