Newlywed and three family members drown trying to take a selfie

Four members of Indian family drown while trying to take selfie

The two daughters and son of the relative they were visiting reportedly accompanied the trio on a visit to the Pambar dam in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

A 20-year old newlywed and her 25-year-old husband were visiting relatives when they, along with four other family members, chose to visit the Pambar dam in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, People reports.

Her new husband, 25, survived and was able to save his teenage sister, CNN reports. They recommend "no selfie" areas in tourist zones, especially places with water bodies or mountain peaks, and at sites with tall buildings.

One of them, a 14-year-old boy named Santosh, slipped and dragged his sisters Sneha, 18, and Kanniga, 19, as well as the newly married woman and the groom's sister into the water.

That study found that there have been 259 recorded deaths of people taking selfies between 2011 and 2017.

It was the latest in a series of tragedies linked to selfies in India. Leaping out of the path of an approaching train, they were killed by a train coming in the other direction.

In September that year, a man was trampled to death by a wild elephant as he tried to take a selfie with the animal in the state of Odisha, The Hindustan Times reported.

In 2017 the state of Karnataka launched a campaign warning of the dangers of taking risky selfies to impress friends online, after a separate incident killed four students.

A study of such deaths published last year found India with almost half of the 259 confirmed cases across six years, but they also were reported in South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya.

The authors note that a significant number of such deaths go unreported in developing nations, so it's quite likely that many countries - particularly on the African continent - may have more selfie deaths, with young people and tourists most at risk. "But if that selfie is accompanied with risky behavior then that's what makes the selfies unsafe".
