Democratic Minneapolis mayor tries to shut down Trump campaign rally

Police Officers Federation of Minneapolis

President Donald Trump's campaign is threatening to sue Minneapolis for trying to force it to pay $530,000 in security costs for this week's rally in the city.

The campaign said Mayor Jacob Frey, whom it dubbed a "radical leftist", had presented the Target Center with a "phony and outlandish bill for security" for the planned Keep America Great rally.

The campaign said the city sent the security cost estimate to Target Center's operator, AEG Management, which threatened to cancel its contract to host the rally if the costs weren't covered. "The Target Center attempted to pass the costs on to the Trump campaign under threat of withholding the use of the arena".

"Additionally, the ridiculous sum of $530,000 is more than 26 times the estimated security costs for a 2009 Target Center health care rally held by President Barack Obama", the campaign added.

President Trump is scheduled to speak at the Target Center in downtown Minneapolis on Thursday. The letter said the Trump campaign "will aggressively pursue all remedies available to it in law or equity".

The Trump campaign also released a letter from its lawyers at Jones Day to AEG, the management company that runs the Target Center.

"The lightweight mayor is hurting the great police and other wonderful supporters", Trump tweeted Tuesday morning.

President Trump thanks the Minneapolis Police Federation for their support, while criticizing the city's mayor. "72,000 ticket requests already". Trump used his Twitter to promote the Minneapolis Police Union's "Cops for Trump" t-shirts they created to skirt the ban.

Trump weighed in as well, encouraging his supporters in a Tuesday morning tweet to "dump" Frey, as well as Rep. Ilhan Omar (D., Minn.), whose district is in Minneapolis.

The dispute erupted late Monday when the campaign accused Mayor Jacob Frey, a Trump critic, of trying to sink the rally.

Should the city pick up the public safety costs associated with the rally?

In a series of tweets on Tuesday, the president said the Frey can not "price out free speech".

Frey opposed the president's visit in a statement last September.

Trump's lawyers referred to the Secret Service's responsibility for arranging law enforcement services in connection with the rally and quote the contract: "As such, no law enforcement costs shall be coordinated by [AEG], charged through [AEG] to [the Campaign], or shall otherwise be reimbursable expenses in connection with the [contract]".
