When the former resident of a Florida neighborhood chose to look up his old neighborhood on Google Earth, he ultimately found the body of a man who had been missing for almost 22 years.

He had called his girlfriend from the club saying he would soon return to their Lantana home.

These crashes occur most often during clear days on dry, rural roads, a South Florida Sun-Sentinel analysis shows.

The body of William Moldt, who was reported missing on Nov 8, 1997, was recovered and positively identified on Tuesday, the Palm Beach Sheriff's Office (PBSO) said in a Facebook post.

The police launched a missing person investigation, but the case went cold, with no new evidence emerging to aid in locating Moldt.

"Amazingly, a vehicle had plainly [been] visible on a Google Earth satellite photo of the area since 2007, but apparently no one had noticed it until 2019, when a property surveyor saw the auto while looking at Google Earth", Moldt's "resolved" listing on The Charley Project website states.

According to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System, Moldt left a nightclub alone around 11 the night before he was reported missing.

A previous resident of a neighborhood in Wellington, Florida, was searching around on Google Earth when they noticed something in the water, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.

According to The Charley Project - an online database that collects information on U.S. cold cases - it was possible to see the auto on Google for more than a decade.

Moldt's body was found still inside his vehicle, which had been submerged in the pond near the housing project.

Fay then contacted another neighbor who used a drone he owned to look in the lake and confirmed that the object in the lake was indeed a auto.

In the images from Google Earth, you can see what appears to be a auto in a retention pond that is flanked by homes.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff's department was called on August 28 to reports of a auto which was in a retention pond in Moon Bay Circle, Wellington. The medical examiner's office then confirmed who the remains belonged to. "We said, 'About 9 years, ' and they said, 'Did you realize that there was a auto in the lake?'" Martin said, ABC 7 reported.

Mr Moldt's family have been informed.
