U.S. recalls Taliban negotiator, vows to keep troops in Afghanistan

Trump’s US-Taliban move pushes Afghans toward fragile vote

Trump, who has said he would like to reduce US troop numbers to about 8,600, addressed promises made since his presidential campaign to leave Afghanistan. They said the United States negotiating team was "happy with the progress made so far" in Doha and the talks were held "in a good atmosphere".

Trump said that the plan to invite the Taliban, who have been involved in Afghan peace negotiations with the United States for months, to the USA presidential retreat Camp David "was my idea, and it was my idea to terminate it".

The militants now control more territory than at any time since the 2001 United States invasion and have so far refused to talk to the Afghan government, whom they deride as American puppets. "While we certainly want that, there is so much more involved in the peace process", said Judd, who lost her partner, Christine Egan, in the attack on the World Trade Center.

On Saturday, following deadly terrorist talks in the Afghan capital of Kabul, Trump said via Twitter that he canceled plans to hold secret Camp David talks with the Taliban leadership and Afghan leaders on Sunday.

"We've hit the Taliban harder in the last four days than they've been hit in over 10 years", Trump said. But he noted that U.S. troops in Afghanistan were hardly "defenseless".

Trump's surprise weekend announcement benefits Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, who was sidelined in the negotiations as the Taliban dismiss his government as a US puppet.

Now as many scramble to comprehend the breakdown in the peace process, some are pleading for stability in a country with little of it.

"We hope the American side to review its current stance", he said.

The Afghan government, sidelined from the negotiations, seemed hesitant to directly respond to Trump's announcement, saying simply that "we have always said that a real peace will come when the Taliban stop killing Afghans and implement a ceasefire and start direct negotiations with the Afghan government" on the country's future - talks that were meant to quickly follow a U.S. -Taliban deal.

The Taliban and the United States have gone through nine rounds of talks in Doha, Qatar. The Taliban again claimed the responsibility for the attacks.

'In terms of advisers, I took my own advice, ' he later told reporters. "We all want the war to end", Rice told Colbert. How many more decades are they willing to fight?

But as he canceled the meeting, Trump also declared the peace negotiations "dead".

On Monday, Trump said his administration was still thinking about a withdrawal of the 14,000 USA soldiers in the country.

Several Republican lawmakers concurred with the president's decision on the talks.

'I don't see where those negotiations go.

Earlier on Monday, Trump denied reports that Vice President Mike Pence and National Security Adviser John Bolton strongly opposed his initial decision to hold meetings with Taliban leaders at Camp David, Maryland.

"So many people have forgotten the sacrifices and the price paid on 9/11", he said.
