Opposition politicians urged the government to scrap the suspension and recall lawmakers to Parliament.

MPs are not scheduled to return to Parliament until 14 October, when there will be a Queen's Speech outlining Mr Johnson's legislative plans.

Scotland's highest court of appeal ruled that Johnson's decision to prorogue, or suspend, parliament from Monday until October 14 was unlawful - a blow for the government as it seeks to leave the European Union on October 31 with or without a deal.

"The Court will accordingly make an Order declaring that the Prime Minister's advice to Her Majesty the Queen and the prorogation which followed thereon was unlawful and is thus null and of no effect".

"We are calling for parliament to be recalled immediately", said Scottish National Party lawmaker Joanna Cherry, who led the challenge, after Scotland's Court of Session ruled the prorogation should be annulled.

And there was more fury after a No10 source reportedly swiped that the Scottish courts had been "chosen for a reason", with Nicola Sturgeon slamming the jibe as "pitiful" and undermining the rule of law.

Langfitt adds, "The ruling is yet another blow to Johnson, who has lost every vote he's called in Parliament. If we stand against them, they can not win a majority".

And Lord Drummond Young said that the United Kingdom government had failed to show a valid reason for the prorogation, adding: "The circumstances, particularly the length of the prorogation, showed that the objective was to prevent such scrutiny".

It came as a host of senior Remainer MPs arrived at Parliament to demand the prime minister end the political shutdown after a Scottish court found his decision was unlawful.

While the full judgement will be handed down later in the week, the judges had stark words for the British government in a summary of their findings.

There have been a variety of reactions after three appeal court judges in Scotland ruled that advice given by the British government to Queen Elizabeth II was illegal.

"The U.K. government needs to bring forward a strong domestic legislative agenda".

However, as the court gave no order for the suspension to be lifted, parliament remains prorogued for the time being.

"The immediate political implications are clear. parliament must be recalled immediately to allow the essential work of scrutiny to continue", she tweeted.

Mr Grieve told BBC News: "It is absolutely central to our constitution that the relationship between the Prime Minister and the Queen is one of the utmost confidentiality and the utmost good faith".

Opponents said the real reason was to shut down debate and challenges to his Brexit plans.

"I call on him to recall Parliament". The nationalist leader at Westminster, Ian Blackford, told the Scotsman shortly after the news broke: "Boris Johnson has got to see the error of his ways".

Independent former Welsh Conservative MP Guto Bebb said Boris Johnson should resign if he has misled the Queen.

"What this has flagged up is the importance of the rule of law and the sovereignty of Parliament, which are the foundations of British democracy", said European Union supporter Pia.
